Feliway Spray Feline Behavior Modification Therapy - 75ml spray bottle
Feliway is an indoor area spray formulated to help prevent urine marking and to relieve stress in cats. This innovative and patented product has some of the properties of feline facial pheromones. Pheromones are the chemical substance secreted by animals to confirm their territory and to communicate with others. Cats usually use facial pheromones to familiarize themselves with their environment. Surfaces marked with these pheromones are recognized by the cat as familiar, non-threatening and comforting. The message they give is “I'm home and everything is fine.”
There are two general categories of feline stressors — anything that would elicit a territorial response and everything else. Cats can react to greater or lesser degrees to:
Urine Marking: Product should be sprayed directly onto the places soiled by the cat and also on prominet objects that could be attractive to the cat. A single dose of one depression of the nozzle should be applied daily at about 4 inches from the site, keeping the bottle vertical. Continue using daily until the cat begins to rub against the site with its head and marking it with its own facial pheremones. Once this begins, maintenance treatment of once weekly can begin.
Prevent or Stop Scratching: Scratching is part of territory marking in its strictest sense. Like urine marking, scratching deposits both the visible and pheremone-based territorial marks. The pheromones are released from the pads under the cat's paws onto the scratched surface. Feliway should be sprayed once a day on areas already scratched or potentially attractive surfaces, typically surfaces fully visible in the room and vertical. Be aware, however that because scratching performs several innate functions for cats it is imperative to provide them a proper place to scratch. Tall sturdy scratching posts, corrugated cardboard scratching boards and cat condos will go a long way to preventing scratching of unwanted areas while allowing your cat to be a cat!
To Reduce Stress: Because Feliway mimics cats natural comforting pheromones it can be used to reduce stress for vet visits, travel, boarding, moving, a new animal or person (and babies) into the house. Again, please do not use directly on the cat. A quick spritz in the cats general vacinity will do the trick.
