U.H. Couple Learns New Tricks from Senior Dog
By Jim Ricker
When Christine and Jeffery Mandrake adopted Doodle from the Humane Society in 2003, they were not looking to start an internet marketing business or explore the benefits of alternative medicine. They just wanted, says Christine, to give this Shepherd/Doberman mix “the best life she could have for whatever time she had left” in her already-long life; Doodle was 16 years old at the time. But what began as an act of compassion for a senior pet threatened with euthanasia turned into a search for alternative ways to give hope to people like them with aging animal companions, and a commitment to be a community resource for our pet-friendly neighborhood.
Doodle is 18 now, and the Mandrakes’ “crash course in senior dog care” has matured into a happy home for 5 cats, 3 dogs, Christine, and Jeffery plus Well Beings.com, a retail outlet for senior cats and dogs (and their partners) that emphasizes premium products, useful information, and community service for aging pets. It started when Doodle was diagnosed with cancer; the Mandrakes, unwilling to accept the unhappy prognosis offered by traditional veterinary medicine, turned to holistic veterinary strategies offered by Dr. Tamara Hebbler, treatments that support the natural healing process rather than “attack” the cancer with chemotherapy or radiation. Through her care and expertise and their dedication to saving Doodle, they learned the value of natural medicines and treatments that promote the health of the whole being in a living community of hope. And Doodle, once an old dog with metastasized cancer and a very bleak outlook, has been cancer-free for a year and is, “despite lumps and bumps and all,” still going strong. The Mandrakes’ success with a seemingly hopeless case inspired them to share the benefits of their experience with others by providing quality pet products from their home.
Jeffery is a savvy, experienced internet marketer, but he and Christine want to do more than just run an online business from their home; they want to apply the holistic concepts of well-being and compassionate care to our community, too. Their home on Munroe Ave., while it doesn’t have a traditional brick and mortar storefront, is open to U.H. neighbors who place their orders online or by phone; you can stop by and chat, pick up your supplies, and say “hi” to Doodle, Mickey Mouse, Carolina, Miss Purdy, Karen, Freedom, Orange Guy, Mister, and Jeffery and Christine. Well Beings also offers free delivery to residents of University Heights who can’t get to the store to pick up their orders. You can place you order online at http://www.wellbeings.com/, by phone at 619-255-6215, or by fax at 619-255-1633. The Mandrakes offer a complete line of pet supplies for senior cats and dogs: premium, healthy foods, accessibility aids such as ramps and stairs, grooming supplies, books, gifts, jewelry, and much more for your animal elders. But the most important thing the family on Munroe Street offers to our neighborhood is a community of hope.
Their community outreach extends both into the virtual, worldwide space of the internet and to our own homes. The web site offers a valuable library of articles about living with senior cats and dogs, and an ever-growing list of informative links to various organizations connected with senior animal care: adoption organizations, educational and other resources where you can access information that will help you with your own pet or help other pets who may need your support. The most valuable resource, however, is the experience and compassion Jeffery and Christine Mandrake offer to all us—dogs, cats, or people—who want to make the final chapters of our lives the best ones in the book.
